CHANDIGARH TRIBUNE, TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2004

A carefully chosen furniture or pieces meant for decoration made in artistic way can create the right ambience, be it at a home, an office, a restaurant or an educational institute. "these days city residents are reverting back to the traditional items. they don't mind to shell out extra money and spend extra time while choosing the things for their homes," said city-based artist Satish Chopra. He has created unique collection in potteries, statues, home furniture and school furniture. The traditions are so rich and have so much variety that it offers every possible design to suit our carving to have a good and different look in your home. Rajasthani and Punjabi traditions have continuously inspired the designer to explore the creativity. His range includes centre table and wall hangings made of polyfibre. Figures of youth doing bhangra, women on spinning wheel and old man playing sarangi stand out. "The fad of keeping statues at home is catching up with city residents. They impart the museum kind of look to your room. Those people who love antiques have a lot of variety in the market. Rajasthani statues are in demand," he said. He also created a beautiful collection of images of god and goddesses. Wall sceneries bring out the artist's essence of farmer's life. "The Indian customer has become more aware about the art. To meet their varied demands is a big challenge for me. They even give various suggestion which helps me to create something unique for them," said Mr. Chopra.

It's often difficult for adults to step into children's shoes, let alone be their fantasy come true. But Satish Chopra has, with a riot of an imagination, stepped into a child's world with polyfibres as his magic wand to conjure figures every child dreams of. His Adharshila Potteries is a nursery of colours, displaying slides, fish-shaped ride-ons, seesaws, dustbins feature cartoons and life-size comic book heroes, all made from polyfibre. "From the time I started my business of ceramic products, I had been wanting to create huge sculptures. But because of the brittle quality of ceramics, I could not. So when polyfiber was available in 2001, it was like opportunity had come my way, " he explains. "Being a non-breakable material, I could cast it in various shapes and sizes and give life to my ideas." When he got down to mastering the basics of the new material, his 20 year's experience in the field of ceramic designing came in handy. "The technique is almost the same," says Chopra. And so, a line of school furniture followed. Fruit shaped chairs were created, along with accessories for children's parks and playrooms. "The first school we gave a facelift to was Guru Har Kishan Public School. A lot of experimenting has gone making penguin and bear shaped dustbins, 10 ft high slides, swings in different colours and frog domes," beams Chopra. Priced at Rs. 1,000 - Rs 15,000, they are now a hot favorite with his clients. Work on 4 ft pink panther with a blackboard is now in progress. "This is for one of the primary schools," he says. His inspiration: "Anything from the daily life, a calendar, the Indian culture, magazines or the people." He is now working on a Diwali collection using ceramic, bone china and polyfiber to sculpt showpieces and the heroes of children's dreams.
